Haze snarled silently under her breath as she sprinted for the school and the opening ceremonies. She was late!
If those people on the ship hadn't taken their sweet time disembarking she would already be there, blending in with the crowds, and making as little of an impression as possible. Instead she would be lucky if she didn't draw every eye in the place when she managed to get to the amphitheater. Haze slipped a hand back into one of her pockets and pulled free three pilfered wallets. She slowed and took a moment to open each; pulling free all the Lien there and tossing the rest into a nearby bush. She had gotten her revenge...and a little spending cash to boot.
She glanced off and noticed other stragglers heading in the same direction she was going. With a sigh she shifted the strap of her rucksack more securely onto her shoulder and continued making her way to the opening ceremonies.
When she arrived the doors were closed. Haze reached out and tested to see if they were locked. She was in luck. They opened easily and, thankfully, quietly. She eased in slowly from the small opening she had made and found a spot near the back of the room. Ozpin was on the stage and speaking... "...be proud that your future could contain great things you need only apply yourselves, the choice to be great belongs to you and I hope all of you will make that choice. Welcome Students.”
Haze frowned and tucked a lock of black hair behind her ear. She glanced around at all those gathered with curious, guarded silver eyes.

Jayk was at the back of the large room, leaning against the wall. He grinned at the silver eyed girl, his own green ones open and excited. "Don't worry none," he whispered. "Ain't really missed nothing but the head honcho tellin' us we get to choose whut we're gonna be."

Haze tensed momentarily as the stranger spoke to her then turned slowly to face Jayk. She looked him over, her eyes darting up and down to quickly catalog any dangers he might pose. He seemed relaxed and sincere in his attempt to help...which seemed so foreign coming from someone she hadn't spent her life growing up with.
This was going to be weird.
She licked her lips and nodded to him. "Thanks..." "So...do you know if there is anyone else who's going to speak at this thing?"
Haze hadn't expected to feel this out of place in a school of other people around her age. She had focused on the entrance exam - passing with flying colours given her experiences outside the kingdoms - and nothing else had seemed to particularly matter. But looking at this fresh-faced kid, excited for his first day as a Beacon Academy student...Haze felt suddenly, utterly alone.
Her silver eyes strayed over the crowd for another moment as she forced back some emotion and then she turned back to Jayk, waiting for his answer. "Also...what's your name?"

That stranger is tall, well built and muscular from the work he did on his family's frontier farm. He's not threatening in his posture, and his clothes are simple, durable, and none too new, but very cared for.
"Jayk Farfield. Pleased ta meetcha" He stuck out his hand to shake hers. It's definitely a worker's hand; callused in places, a bit tanned from sun and weather. "Don't rightly know who else might speak jus' yet, but it was a dusted short one iffen that's why we all got called inter here."

She hesitated a moment, regarding the hand offered to her like it might bite her. Then, with a soft sigh, she finally reached out and accepted the shake. Haze was a pale, slim, slip of a girl dressed all in muted colours. Despite this, her grip was firm with the hint of a challenge in it. She had her own scars and tells of a harsher life, but most of them were hidden from prying eyes.
Haze pulled her hand free after another moment and hitched her bag once more to rest more comfortably on her shoulder. "Dusted short one? I am sorry if this comes off as rude, but what does that mean?" She kept her voice low as she spoke.
Her attention was mostly on Jayk and their blooming conversation, but her eyes darted out amongst the crowd every so often, like she wasn't completely at ease. "Are you originally from Vale...?" She would ask after another moment of silence

"Right sorry there. Cussin's not one o' things ma tolerates, no ma'am. So my brothers'n' I, we got a bit creative. I meant that iffen' we's all here fer speaches, then ol' perfesser Ozpin just had us here fer less than a minute of jawin'." Jayk does meet the challenge, just shaking firmly and warmly.
"Bit of a contention there, ta be honest. We're a frontier family, barely able to get the Crosscontinental. We're close 'nuff to Vale to do almost all our business through here, but we ain't in the safe zones, not really. Kinda why I'm here, iffen ya catch me?" He notes her nervousness. "I kin move off the wall an' let ya feel less open, if ya like."

Haze took once last sweeping look over the crowd as she hesitated. Finally she nodded to Jayk's offer and would slip in when he made the room. "Sure. It's not the amount of people that gets to me. It's the fact that all of them are strangers." She said, voice still low so as not travel beyond the two of them.
When Jayk mentioned being part of a frontier family and not living in a safe area she forced back a flinch. She couldn't help but wonder if the tribe had ever attacked their homestead. If they had she hadn't been amongst the party that did it, but the thought lingered much longer than she would have preferred as she watched his face.
Haze had never thought she might meet one of their marks at the academy when the elders had sent her here. Now that possibility all to real even if it hadn't yet been proven. She frowned a moment and wondered if this had been the best idea after all. She could have made a case for going to any of the other academies on Remnant...well, all but Atlas anyway. The idea of enlisting into the military had appealed to no one and would have been counter intuitive and far more intrusive to her past than would have been desired. The longer she thought about it, Haze realized the situation would be the same pretty much everywhere else anyway. "So, you came here to train so you could go back and protect everything? What about your brothers? Have any of them come here before? Or do they want to?"
((OOC: Sorry about the late post. I remember reading things, but then my brain decided to remember that I then responded and thought I was spending the rest of the weekend waiting for a response >_<))

((No problems here. Real life trumps everything.))
"I unnerstan' that. Feels like I'm walkin' 'round in ma underclothes sometimes, what with how strange and big this place is. Don't rightly know many folk, an' I ain't never had much schoolin' ta be honest. So it's gonna be hard work catchin' up ta most here, but hard work ain't nothin' ta be afeared of." He cocks his head a bit at the pause, but shrugs. "We've got a bit of a Clan out there, an' people get learned early ta speak their mind honest, keep tempers an' such. Dunno 'bout me goin' home. Jus' look ta be sent where they need me, I guess. Don't hold with them grimbles playing with anyone's insides, no matter where they're from. Pappy always said ever'one bleeds the same, no matter what their skin."

"On that last sentiment I whole-heartedly agree. I want to help to keep people from losing their loved ones and their lives to those creatures..." She glared out into the crowd as she spoke, but her attention was elsewhere.
Haze shook herself and looked back to Jayk, the corner of her mouth twitching up in a ghost of a smile. "As for you needing to work hard to catch up...maybe you know more than you realize. Not everything is 'book learning' here. What with the emphasis on...well...hunting."
She noticed that some of the crowd seemed to be streaming out. "I wonder where they are going...?"
((OOC: If you like we can cut the scene around here and join the others at the sleep over thread))
